Day 24. Slipping and Falling

If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. (Matthew5:29-30)

One of the problems with familiar Bible passages like this one is that you can read them quickly and move on unchanged. If there is anything in your life that is causing you to stumble in your journey to be with God and like God, today is the day you stop tripping over it. You may have given the Lord your unhealthy habits, your social media and smartphone habits, but maybe there is something else keeping you from totally turning to Him.

Consider your hobbies, the things that rob you of your time and money. While there is nothing inherently wrong with having a hobby, your passions and pleasures can become preeminent, taking up your first priority spot. This is when you’ve got it backwards, and wallking backward is a lot like stumbling blindly in the dark.

Prayer: Lord, we often want so many things that causes us to stumble and fall. According to your word, It is good that we grasp the one and do not let the other slip from our hands. For if we reverence you, we will end up with both of them. We love you and we are grateful that you are always available to pick us up when we slip and fall. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
